Miss Tourism Ankole Queens join drive to craft eco-friendly sanitary pads

Miss Tourism Queens in the Ankole region are prepping to launch an initiative dubbed ‘Empower Her’ where they will craft environmentally friendly sanitary pads meant to provide a solution to the needy girls and women who can’t afford single-use pads. This is through training ladies on how to make their pads and giving out samples.

According to Miss Hopekins, creativity is also considered to conserve the environment by reducing the over usage of single-use pads and making the idea of reusable (eco-friendly sanitary pads) a source of income for the unemployed people in Ankole.

“The raw materials are affordable. To make reusable sanitary pads, you require cotton cloth, nylon cloth, a white towel, waterproof cloth or plastic, a button or a fastener, a pair of scissors, a needle, and threads to sew the materials together,” Hopekins said.

Besides reusable sanitary pads, she says that Miss Tourism Queens of Ankole have been planting trees and cleaning markets in the ‘Let The Pearl Shine Campaign’ advocating for greening tourism and letting Uganda remain a beautiful tourist destination.

“We planted trees and we were advocating for environmental conservation and protection of River Rwizi from human activities. This was to promote and protect tourism in our region, and to conserve our climate,” she said.

Empower Her Initiative will also look at training people in this community on how to make reusable pads for a living. Conclusively, the initiative will also look at women in prisons, in local communities, and girls in schools.

“We seek support from all the people of Ankole to join us, entities or organizations, and people all over the country. Together we can promote the tourism of our region and the welfare of each other,” she said.
