For more than 40 years, The Ebonies have graced Uganda’s theatre so much that their main actors such as Sam Bagenda, aka Dr Bossa and Fauziah Nakiboneka, aka Sarah Gava, have become household names.
With Uganda’s theatre undergoing a lot of changes thanks to technology, one would expect The Ebonies and other old drama groups to fade away.
However, this has not been the case. The Ebonies have adjusted to the changing times and have remained to grace Uganda’s theatre, reinforcing the saying that while a new broom sweeps well, the old one knows all the corners.
Ahead of Easter, the Ebonies are at it again with a new play titled Gregarious, a sizzling drama exploring the intricacies of a family. It also expounds on how domestic violence is affecting families.
Launched on Friday at Theatre La Bonita, Gregarious attracted a big audience that was left yearning for more even after the play which featured prominent actors and actresses such as Gava, Evelyn Namulondo and Ajiswaga.
Speaking at the launch, Dr Bbosa promised an unforgettable Easter weekend of entertainment.
“We have prepared adequately for this play. Gregarious features all your favourite Ebonies stars. We have put all ingredients of quality; the quality of production is special, as some of you have seen. This is a play you can watch as a family with even the children,” he said.
Nakiboneka, aka Gava, said the way the play is staged shows innovation.
“We were born to make you happy. Come and have fun,” she said.
