Immediately the line, ‘“the only man I was ever afraid of was a woman named Griselda Blanco” – Pablo Escobar’ came on the screen, we knew Griselda was going to be bloody. Turns out this conclusion is both literal and figurative when it comes to the mini-series.
Griselda is a fictionalised telling of Griselda Branco, who was a drug lord in Miami in the 1970s. So the story is generally based on her life but not all the events are true. In the series, we see her escaping Colombia, moving to Miami with her sons, setting up a cocaine ring. Of course there’s a lot of violence and even murder in there so she attracts the authorities and we see her navigate this.
In Griselda, Sofia Vergara proves those of us who had cast her in a specific role in our minds. In fact, she is almost unrecognisable as she takes on such a hard demeanor that is a far cry from the roles we’ve seen her play before. The series is also well-paced so it keeps you interested, and doesn’t feel as long as it was. My biggest contention was the violence and strong language which are a lot.
Otherwise, for lovers of crime dramas, this is good entertainment.
