Miss Uganda set to depart for Miss World Festival in India

Miss Uganda Hannah Karema Tumukunde will on Saturday embark on her journey to the 71st Miss World Festival set to be held in India.

In a press conference held at the Sheraton Hotel, the Miss Uganda team announced the trip, saying that Miss Hannah was excited to represent Uganda on the global stage and was looking forward to showcasing the beauty, talent, and grace of the Ugandan people.

“She has been diligently preparing for the competition and is grateful for the support she has received from her fans, sponsors, and Miss Brenda Nanyonjo the Chief Executive Officer – Miss Uganda,” said.

The 71st Miss World Festival, taking place in India, is a prestigious event that celebrates female achievement and empowerment.

This year’s festival holds special significance as it marks the return of the event to India after a hiatus of 28 years.

Hannah Karema was crowned the winner of the Miss Uganda 2023 beauty pageant at the finale held at UMA Multipurpose Hall on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

The 24-year-old called for public support from Uganda if she is to stand any chance of winning. “At Miss World, there are 120 countries and each contestant has support. So they want to see if your country values you that much. To give you that crown they want to see if your country is behind you,” she said. Kalema nonetheless said she feels ready, having fulfilled all the requirements for the pageant. She says she is very confident especially about her “Miss World with a Purpose” project which she submitted.

“But of course there are more things they are looking for and hopefully I have those as a person,” she said.

Unlike the past years, this time the beauty queen has sponsors including Uganda Air which has offered The Crane that will fly Miss Hannah to New Delhi for the pageant.

They have also organized a parade for the Ugandans that will fly to support the Ugandan queen in New Delhi.

Miss World is the oldest-running international pageant. Launched in 1951, the core tenant of the pageant is a call to action that goes beyond outer beauty and how your beauty can be a platform for change, thus dubbed “Beauty with a Purpose.” Contestants from 120 countries are taking part in this year’s contest which will be taking place in New Delhi and Mumbai.
