Musician Moses Ssali, popularly known as Bebe Cool, has threatened legal action against Airtel Uganda, demanding Shs200 million in damages for alleged data depletion that disrupted his “important Zoom business meeting.”
According to an intention to sue notice received by Airtel Uganda on February 14, 2024, Bebe Cool claims that on January 16, 2024, 22 Gigabytes of data (worth Shs50,000) were consumed within 4 hours without justifiable usage.
He demands a refund of the unused data, Shs100 million to cover travel expenses incurred due to the meeting disruption, and another Shs100 million for inconveniences.
“This unethical data depletion disrupted my important Zoom business meeting scheduled for that same night,” the letter states. “As a result, I had to incur travel expenses with my team for a physical meeting in Lagos.”
Bebe Cool further elaborated, “Around 10:00 pm, I briefly opened TikTok for about five minutes, using no more than 300MBs. I then charged my phone in preparation for the Zoom meeting. To my surprise, at 12:34 am, without any further usage, I received an alert that only 5649MBs remained, with over 17GBs depleted.”
He claims the remaining data was then used up within two minutes. “This is an act of unjustified self-enrichment and a breach of our prepaid agreement,” he asserts.
Bebe Cool vowed to pursue legal action if Airtel fails to meet his demands. This incident follows a similar complaint from musician Priscilla Zawedde (Azawi), sparking debates online.
