David Kibuuka and Joseph Opio have been writers for seven years at the Daily Show during the time Trevor Noah has been hosting it.

On Monday, Trevor Noah did not forget to pay tribute to them while giving a speech after being announced the winner in the ‘Outstanding Variety Talk Series’ at the historic 75th Emmy Awards.

“I want to start by thanking the crazy Africans who followed me to this country, David Kibuuka and Joseph Opio, David Meyer, my partner in crime, the writers and the team, Roy Wood Jr. from the very beginning,” Trevor Noah said during his acceptance speech.

He later on went ahead and posted “Soooo… this happened. What a night last night! Big congrats again to the entire @TheDailyShow team! Thank you @TelevisionAcad for this absolute honour! Jimmy, Seth, Stephen, and Jon, thank you for the support and camaraderie along the journey. Truly an honour to be in the same category with you. Wow. Team Daily Show, we did it baby!” on his X handle.

Trevor Noah makes history as the first African and first black person to win an Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series, since the category was introduced in 2015. Trevor Noah has another Emmy award, which he earned in 2017 for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series.

The comedian has been nominated for the Emmy category five times before, but his sixth nomination, for his final season hosting The Daily Show, finally secured him the award.

He exited The Daily Show September 2022 after seven years as host and a search for his replacement is still ongoing.

The Emmys recognize excellence in television programming and individual achievement for the 2022-2023 season and are the most prestigious honours in the US television industry.
