When Steve Jean unveiled the girl group Warafiki, many people started comparing them to Blu *3, another Girl group that he started back in the day. The comparisons were far-fetched because the new group has so far released one single titled ‘Bwekati’ compared to many songs that Blu *3 released back in the day before the girls went solo.
However, the girls met at Fenon Records yesterday and you could see the excitement from both sides.
After sharing hugs, Jackie Chandiru asked them how things were faring and they said all was well before she intervened to tell them that she wished things become harder because only then, they will know the toughness of the music industry.
Lilian also interjected and told them that with Steve Jean’s strictness, they were destined for greatness.
It was then that the five, apart from Cindy Sanyu who wasn’t part of the meet, started singing ‘Bwekati’.
Steve Jean discovered Blu *3 back in the early 20s and the group was derived to represent “3 Beautiful (or Black) Ladies from Uganda.” The original lineup comprised Jackie Chandiru, Lilian Mbabazi, and Cinderella Sanyu (Cindy), who was later succeeded by Mya Baganda.
The group went on to become the biggest girl group in East Africa, winning several accolades and getting nominations for prestigious awards as well as two albums “Hitaji” (2004) and “Burn” (2007) under their name.
During their recent get-together performance at Skyz Hotel, the girls appreciated their mentor midway through their performance.
“We can’t commence this show without acknowledging the person who initiated it, the person who mentored us. We owe our identity to the remarkable individual named Steve Jean. Steve believed in us from the very beginning when we were just starting. We genuinely appreciate it, thank you,” they said.
