Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga has today noted that the four-day arts festival organised in Jinja City known as Nyege Nyege was concluded successfully despite the security alerts from the United Kingdom and United States Embassies in Uganda.

While speaking during a security presser at Police headquarters in Naguru, Mr Enanga told the media that both the Nyege Nyege festival and the Royal Dinner that took place in the Busoga region ended peacefully. Police thanked the over 1000 fans and well-wishers who took the courage to attend the two events including citizens from other Countries despite the alerts.

“There were no specific threats or intelligence linked to the double event. The fans were vigilant,” said the Police Spokesperson.

“They were just a few incidents which were reported to Police like 20 cases of theft of mobile phones, three cases of impersonation of security and organisers, five minor fire outbreaks, three cases of people in possession of marijuana, one case of stealing a motor vehicle and 12 cases of people arrested with forged tickets,” Enanga mentioned.

A total of 45 suspects were arrested. Out of these, 10 were issued Police bonds while arrangements are being made to arraign 35 suspects in Court. This is according to the Police.

On the eve of Nyege Nyege, there were terror alerts that had been issued by the US and UK Embassies in Uganda which also advised the citizens of the two countries to refrain from attending the famous festival. The US Embassy further issued a notice to all its employees a day before the arts and cultural extravaganza kicked off, stopping them from attending the festival on grounds of security threats.
