Nigerian musician recounts her arrest in Uganda

Tems

On December 13, 2020, two Nigerian artistes Tems and Omah Lay were arrested by Uganda Police for performing at an ‘unauthorized concert’ that breached COVID-19 protocols.

Three years later, the Grammy award winner, while appearing in an interview at the Angie Martinez show, said her arrest in Uganda was one of the worst times of her life.

“We didn’t break the rules but it was basically like a set-up. We had a show in Uganda. It was during the Covid year but they had opened things up. They had just had a rally and people were moving out. It wasn’t on lockdown. It was like the aftermath of Covid. The organizers sent us the permits, everything was cool and we went there and there was this particular artiste. I am not sure what his role was but he was basically threatening Nigerian artistes that they shouldn’t come and after the show, the police came and were not in uniform and asked us to follow them,” she narrated.

Tems added that she spent two nights in prison and thought she was not going to come out.

“I thought like this was happening for me to help these people in this prison.”
She further added that the uniform she was given was stinking and was not washed.
