Following an appeal, High Court Judge Margaret Mutonyi has freed Kafta Queen, an 18-year-old Tanzanian national who had been jailed for torturing her 15-year-old friend.
After pleading guilty to the counts of aggravated torture and intentionally inflicting bodily harm on her friend, Kira Chief Magistrate Ms. Roseline Nsenge sentenced the appellant to 3 years in Luzira Women’s jail.
This was after a viral video surfaced showing Kafta Queen beating up a young acquaintance for attempting to kidnap her boyfriend, Derrick Lwanga, she was detained and prosecuted before the Kira Magistrates Court in January of this year.
According to police findings, Kafta deceived the victim into attending her birthday celebration. Police investigations revealed that Kafta tricked the victim into going to her birthday party but on arrival, the former and her friends attacked her and beat her while accusing her of taking her lover, as seen in the video.
The High Court Judge issued an order on July 21 that permitted the appeal brought by Mr. Zimbe Zephania on behalf of the appellant, overturned the conviction, sentence, and orders of the trial court, and ordered that the appellant be released immediately unless detained on other legal charges.
Ms. Carol Tabaro, the State Attorney representing the respondent, and Mr. Zimbe Zephania, the appellant, were present when the decision was reached.
