Every July 14, the French celebrate the storming of the Bastille prison and the start of the French Revolution in 1789. The day, formally known as ‘fete nationale francaise’ also reminds the French community to celebrate France’s ideals of “liberty, equality and fraternity.
On Friday, the celebrations were led by Xavier Sticker, the New France ambassador to Uganda at his residence in Nakasero. This was his first time to officiate Bastille Day celebrations in Uganda.

Recognising the mark the French Revolution left on France and the world at large, Justice Minister Norbert Mao said it was through a resolute and courageous fight against oppression, a pursuit of liberty, equality, and fraternity, that the ideals adopted by the French Revolution continue to resonate around the world, inspiring many nations, institutions and individuals to stand for a better future.
Mao said Uganda looks forward to exploring new avenues of cooperation and expanding trade partnerships.

“By working together, we can address the challenges of our time, including climate change, sustainable development, peace and security,” he said.
Jean-Philippe Bittencourt, the general manager Sheraton, said celebrating the day in Uganda reminds him of how hospitable Ugandans are, even to the point of knowing the different French holidays.

“It is also a day to think about how to help each other, help people feel that they have the liberty to express themselves, have access to jobs and a decent life,” Bittencourt said.
The MC, Sandra Twinoburyo, said the day brings an opportunity to create new networks and strengthen the old ones, as people also learn more about the French National day.
The celebrations that started with precise speeches later phased into entertainment that started with the Ghetto kids and thereafter a live band performance.
