UOT rush to Truth Social, Threads after introduction of new Twitter restrictions

Ugandans On Twitter have rushed to open up accounts on alternative Social apps known as Truth Social and Treads after new restrictions were introduced on the app they cherished a lot.

Last week, most Twitter users were puzzled after realising that they could not use the app again after reaching what was termed as a rate limit for the day.

Billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter came out to explain the reason behind the new restrictions. In one of his tweets, he said:

“To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits: Verified accounts are limited to reading 6000 posts/day, Unverified accounts to 600 posts/day, New unverified accounts to 300/day.”

In another Tweet, Elon Musk announced that the rate limits were to increase to 8000 for verified accounts, 800 for unverified, and 400 for new unverified. This was later changed to 10000, 1000, and 500 posts.

The billionaire further explained that the reason he set a “View Limit” is because everyone is a Twitter addict and needs to go outside. “I’m doing a good deed for the world here,” he said.

Many Twitter users in Uganda and globally were left wondering and doubting the future of the app. Several changes have been made on Twitter ever since Musk took over its ownership. Many of these changes have faced scrutiny and criticism.

With many social media users questioning what their future on Twitter might look like, several of them have now opted to open up accounts on Donald Trump’s Truth Social and Meta’s Threads.

Most of them have also utilized their Twitter handles to announce that they have opened up accounts on the other apps and also encouraged other users to follow them. The current migration from one app to another has as well opened the way for making memes and hilarious posts and tweets about the whole situation by the users.

Threads was launched on July 5, 2023; 7 days ago, and has already gathered 107 million (as of July 12, 2023).

Similar to Twitter, it is an American social media and social networking service owned and operated by Meta Platforms. It offers users the ability to post and share text, images, and videos, as well as to interact with other users’ posts through replies, reposts, and likes. The service operates similarly to other microblogging platforms such as Twitter. Threads is closely integrated with Instagram, which is also owned by Meta.

It gained 100 million users within its first five days, surpassing the record set by ChatGPT to reach that total faster than any platform in history.

Twitter is now threatening legal action against Meta over its new text-based “Twitter killer” platform, accusing the social media giant of poaching former employees to create a “copycat” application.

On the other hand, Truth Social was created on October 20, 2021, and owned by Trump Media and Technology Group which belongs to former US President Donald Trump. The site was created after the influential political figure was banned from Twitter after his incitement that led to riots at the Capitol building. The service was officially launched on February 21, 2022, and its features look almost the same as those of Twitter. There are around 2 million active Truth Social users.
