Uganda Musicians Association stands with Serena Bata

Singer Serena Bata is still in an ongoing contractual dispute with events promoter and talent manager Abbey Musinguzi, known as Abitex Promoter who used to manage her.

The dispute even forced Abitex to warn Serena Bata and several media houses from performing and playing songs she recorded while under his management.

With this, the Uganda Musicians Association announced their support for the singer. They will work in partnership with the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) and The Pan-African Network for Artistic Freedom (PANAF) to ensure that Serena Bata’s rights and integrity are upheld.

The association, after studying the circumstances of the dispute between Abitex and Serena Bata, has established that it’s the rights and interests of the artist that have been and are at threat since the beginning of the said contract and the 350 million demand notice for fees for performances, losses, damages, and expenses related to the alleged breach.

“The Uganda Musicians Association defends our members’ rights and freedoms. We will work tirelessly alongside our FHRI partners through PANAF to seek a fair resolution. This is in the right interest of Serena Bata and the wider artistic community. The parties are committed to ensuring that artists’ rights and interests are protected while promoting artistic freedom and integrity,” UMA Secretary, Phina Mugerwa Masanyalaze stated.

UMA encourages all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue and work towards an amicable solution. While the association respects contracts and agreements, it also believes in creative expression. It also believes in the need for artists to showcase their talents.
