On the 28th of May 2023, fashion enthusiasts from all over Kampala will converge at the Circular Design Hub Bugolobi to witness the Shebang Fashion Show. The event is to raise awareness about sustainable fashion and mental health about menstrual health challenges while showcasing the talent of some of the most promising designers in the city.
The Shebang fashion uses design and fashion to highlight the stigma on menstrual health and it’s organized by the Wellbeing Foundation in partnership with Wuzi Africa.
According to the founder Shyaka Lwanyaaga, their goal is not to change who these young people are but to realign their psychological framework around their struggle and change their self-pity and perception of rough life into it being the biggest resource they have as it hands them more wisdom of survival in their young age more than most gain in their entire life.
“This year’s theme is mental health and fashion is a great communication and behavioral change tool, so we are coming together with different designers to create a platform for untold stories,” said Lwanyaaga.
The designers will be showcasing different collections as a conversation starter to the different challenges including shame and stigma.
The show will feature seven designers, each of whom brings a unique perspective to the runway. Allen Nabukenya of Njola Impression is known for her bold, prints that are inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Uganda. Katende Godfrey of IGC Fashion, on the other hand, is known for his sophisticated designs that are perfect. Mukasa Najib of Bobbin Case Clothing focuses on creating clothing that is both comfortable and practical, while Musema Robert of Msema Culture draws inspiration from the natural world to create designs that are both beautiful and sustainable.
Other designers include Fiona Naigwe of My Fashion Biography, who is known for her playful, whimsical designs, and Hilda Babirye of Curiosity Arc, who specializes in creating sustainable fashion. Each of these designers brings a unique perspective to the runway, and their designs are sure to captivate and inspire all those who attend the show.
With the Wellbeing Foundation located in Kisenyi, it operates in different parts of the country through partners giving young people from side-lined backgrounds and communities a voice of expression, a choice of life, and an opportunity to succeed in a world system that has previously left them behind.
The event also aims to raise awareness about mental health, an issue that is often overlooked in the fashion industry. The organizers believe that fashion and mental health are closely linked and that by promoting sustainable fashion and raising awareness about mental health, they can help create a more compassionate and sustainable world.
The Circular Design Hub 5th Street Bugolobi as an implementing partner is hosting the show. The hub is a space for designers, innovators, and entrepreneurs to collaborate and create sustainable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems. By hosting the Shebang Fashion Show, the hub is helping to promote sustainable fashion and mental health, while showcasing the talent of some of the city’s most promising designers.
