Miss Tourism Uganda management clarifies on money swindling saga

The management of the Miss Tourism Uganda beauty pageant has cleared the air regarding a story published in the Daily Monitor. Speaking to one of Miss Tourism Uganda’s officials, the story is false as it lacks evidence.

“First things first, Miss Tourism Uganda has no involvement in the ongoing “Explore Uganda” project. It is rather a project coordinated and run by the Ministry of Tourism,” the official said. He said that Miss Tourism Uganda and its ambassadors must promote domestic tourism when the opportunity comes. “Explore Uganda” works with different celebrities to influence the campaign aimed at promoting local tourism. To sum it up, they also invited Miss Tourism beauty queens to participate in the campaign.

When the campaign recently went to the Western part of Uganda, the three Miss Tourism Uganda beauty queens took part in the campaign. Just like any others on the campaign, they were entitled to facilitation from the Ministry of Tourism who are the owners of the campaign.

According to the story, a top official in the Ministry of Tourism is accused of swindling allowances meant for the Miss Tourism regional queens. As the reporter mentions, one of the Queens said they were supposed to take home facilitation of Shs500,000 but ended up with Shs200,000. It is alleged that the person in charge of their facilitation at the Ministry took Shs300,000 from each of them.

When Miss Tourism Uganda was clearing the air, they said that as Miss Tourism Uganda, they are not in any way connected to the finances involved in the project but for the wellbeing of their Beauty Queens, the office of Miss Tourism Uganda paid part of their facilitation which the queens were meant to refund back to the office once they are paid by Ministry of Tourism while in the field attending to “Explore Uganda” projects. They explain why all the Shs500,000 wasn’t given to the beauty queens because the arrangement was that they deduct the facilitation given to them by the office and send it back to the Miss Tourism office which is what they did.
