Artiste leaders call for creation of own ministry

With the creation of several musician federations and associations, creative industry stakeholders are seeking for an independent ministry as it is significant in the development of the sector.

During a meeting with the prime minister recently, the Uganda Musicians Association, The National Cultural Forum, Uganda National Cultural Centre, Uganda Reproduction Rights Organisation and Uganda Performing Rights Society requested the prime minister to consolidate all functions under a single ministry.

The artistes believe that the creation of a dedicated Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries could potentially streamline efforts, create a unified vision, and provide more direct support to artistes and creatives across various disciplines.

“This consolidation could bring about a more coordinated approach to decision-making, resource allocation, and policy development for the creative industries. However, the success of this proposition would heavily depend on the commitment and effectiveness of the government in implementing it. The creation of a dedicated ministry for the creative industry is a significant policy change that could potentially improve the development and recognition of the creative sector in Uganda,” reads a document from Uganda Musicians Association.
