When she was crowned Miss Uganda 2023-2024, Hannah Karema Tumukunde could not believe she had emerged winner of the pageant. One of the prizes she was excited about was driving home in a black Toyota Wish.

Little did the senior six vacist know that more goodies were yet to come her way. The latest to come on her plate is a fully paid tuition fees scholarship by ISBAT University in Kampala for a course of her choice.

“I am excited about the opportunity and I will do my best to come out with the best results. It means a lot to me because it is not something that every university can offer. I have my mind on a number of courses to study and I am yet to come to a conclusion,” a joyous Karema said.

Brenda Nanyonjo, the CEO Miss Uganda said advancing education is very important especially for the girl child, who most times don’t continue with university because of lacking tuition.

“Some of the Miss Uganda contestants are senior six leavers. Some come from not-well off families and need to pursue higher education. We don’t only look at their appearance but so many things. Such a scholarship is useful in the lives of these young women to help them acquire knowledge they will use to start careers after university,” Nanyonjo said.

Apart from Karema, the other four contestants, with the first runner up, Martha Whitney Ademun, second runner-up, Prossy Premah Agwang and finalists Jerusha Muwanguzi and Jessica Sserwadda also scooped 50 percent tuition fees scholarship for their university education in their Master’s and Bachelor’s programs at the same university. The scholarship programs for the five contestants is worth Shs30m.

The Vice-Chancellor of ISBAT University Mathew Kattampackal reiterated the institution’s commitment to promoting education and empowering young women in Uganda through scholarship initiatives.

Apart from being crowned Miss Uganda, Karema will also have an opportunity to represent Uganda at the Miss World pageant later this year.
