It is so good when a few minutes of scrolling on Netflix rewards you with something worth your time and MBs. That is what I thought after bingeing on Night Agent. The show does not have big stars, so it was not hyped up. Interestingly, this might be one of the reasons I enjoyed it.
The show is about Peter (Basso), an FBI agent who annoyed someone and ended up on night duty (hence the show’s name) in the basement of the White House. His job is as a phone operator. The only problem is that said phone never rings. Then it does. On the other end of the line is Rose (Buchanan), a civilian who says her life is in danger. It has to do with her work in cyber-security unearthing acts of treason. Peter gets into agent mode and partners with her to get to the bottom of it. Soon, Maddie (Desjardins), the vice president’s daughter is roped into the drama. Not to mention that there are assassins in this mix.
Night Agent builds up with every episode, which works well for a TV show. When shows have this huge build-up towards a particular event, there is always tension about how the characters will deal with it when it finally comes. However, when we are introduced to a new problem every episode or the other, we get to really take in what is happening with the characters, even when new ones are introduced. There is no rush to get to the end of the story, even when tension is built up. This little trick also manages expectations because you end up enjoying the show more than anticipated. This formula is working for some of Netflix’s original stories, even when the storyline is not as original.
