Music makers advocate for mental health through film

Mental health has recently ranked itself among the silent killers in Uganda. Suicide cases have been on the rise and according to the Executive Director of Butabika National Referral hospital, Dr. Juliet Nakku, mental health-related cases have increased over the last two years.

The situation has got many concerned and worried, including those on the entertainment scene thus the making of the ‘Session’ movie.
‘Session’ is a psychological thriller following the story of Dave who wakes up in an arduous situation where his life is threatened by a man putting on a mask. He is given two choices to either guess the reason why is captured and also narrate the entire story or listen on as his captor tells it all.

The condition is if he tells it right, he gets his freedom back and if he fails, he gets killed.
Afro-beat music composer and musician Avion Kasumba alias Avion King, the writer and director of the movie explained that the story was inspired by the rate at which mental health issues are skyrocketing in the world. It got him thinking and making research and among the causes, he realized that many people fail to embrace changes and new beginnings.

“I thought of people who live in their past every day. Blaming whatever went wrong in their past for their present discomfort and in most cases that specific event that you don’t remember might be the one to bring your death. We are trying to approach mental health disorders based on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,” he said.

Among the cast is Actor Brian Byamukama, popular for starring in Shakespeare’s ‘Merchant of Venice’ theatre play, and social media comedian Nasser Tonda aka Sesa Bat.
The producer explained that they chose Sesa for the role because they needed someone who the audience would least expect to pull it off.

“And when we met for the first time, he proved to be perfect for the role. Besides, the unserious Sesa bat we see online is a psychology graduate so we were right about him and he did not disappoint,” Avion King said
The film has music producer Artin Pro and Avion King as Executive producers, Talent manager Anorld Ssempijja alias Apple as the line producer manager, Sam Kasolo as the producer, Bonique and Jovan Kangereza as managers, and Axtra Nation on the sound.

It is set to premiere at century Arena mall on March 5, at an entry fee of Shs 30,000 for early bird tickets and Shs 50,000 at the gate.
