The West has created an image of Africa, it’s the wild, uninhabited savannah, the tropical forests, with body art splashed on every African. And because of this, we’ve come to always represent this kind of Africa whenever we seek to grab the attention of the West. When you get this, then you get Eddy Kenzo’s video for ‘Born in Africa.’
Not that this side of Africa doesn’t exist, but it’s overdone, it now borders on the lines of visual orientalism. The audio downsides notwithstanding, there is no new news in the music video. It’s set up in this tropical forest, with rivers flowing through. And on the other side, is the savage African hunter or hunters, pouncing around for their food and dancing while at it.
Then you have all the wild animals that Africa has to offer, and Kenzo taking over with his group of dancers. Will you enjoy it? Maybe not, maybe the audio already sent you to ICU!
