Dog Gone is not an exciting movie. I will start with that. It is not the movie you select when you are looking for an adrenaline rush. It is, however, the movie you choose when you are looking for a tag on those heartstrings and are not in the mood for a Hallmark-proportion movie. Based on a true story, Dog Gone is about a young man and his dog –for real, for real. Fielding (Berchtold) gets a dog from the pound to deal with the loneliness he feels after his girlfriend leaves him. His friend, Nate (Peine), tries to dissuade him but Fielding commits to the dog, even throwing it a welcome party and naming it, Gonker.

Despite his commitment to Gonker, Fielding does not seem committed to finding a career after university, much to his parents’ chagrin. This causes tension between him and his father, especially. However, when Gonker goes missing, this creates an opportunity for father and son to have a heart-to-heart (or several) as they search for the dog. Their conversations can be relatable for anyone who is watching and is not sure of what they want to do with their lives in the New Year and beyond, and has not figured it out themselves. It is also relatable for people with pets that are considered part of the family. Even if dogs are not your thing, seeing how finding this dog brought people together will make you feel good.

If that does not move you, the cute photos of the cast and crew with their dogs while the credits are running should surely do it.
