Listening to GNL Zamba and Miriam Tamar’s ‘We cry: Story Ya Luka’ is evidence that the right lyrics in a combination of good instruments and rhythm stir strong emotions that can change the world.
Released 8 years ago to address the dangers of unprotected sex and the stigma of HIV/AIDS, the visuals of the song are a musical short movie poetically aligned to highlight how the love of cheap things can be the expense of a life.
The introduction of the song is a hook. It is a story of a materialistic young girl who sleeps with a man without protection and contracts the virus.
“Ate nga Baby girl bebano abagala ennyo obutaala, yamuwa eza weave namuwa eza beauty parlor kati laba kekaseera okusasulira,” some of the lyrics in the introduction.
Because you never know who the next partner will be, Luka, a DJ with big dreams ahead picks interest in the girl. He contracts the virus after having unprotected sex with her. Because of self and external stigma, Luka ends his life by hanging.
We cry calls for Abstinence, Faithfulness, and using a condom. The song advocates for love towards the diseased and unity against stigma.
Happy World AIDS Day.
