TRU iKon fashion brand makes its way to Uganda

Shakeem Alpha Lubega the Creative Director and co-founder of Tru Ikon

Ugandans are embracing fashion and the fast changing trends that come with it each passing day. When it comes to Ugandan fashion, there are some names everyone expects to hear. However, today we are looking at TRU iKON a new international fashion brand owned by talented Ugandan fashion designers.

The International beauty and clothing brand with strong African roots but based in Amsterdam has now made its way to Kampala, Uganda.

According to Shakeem Alpha the Creative Director and co-founder of TRU iKON, they design, produce, distribute and retail fashion products and accessories for both men and women and they believe now is the time for Uganda and Africa at large.

“We are based in Amsterdam but have roots in Africa from Uganda and the rest of East Africa. We produce apparel and beauty products. We manage all processes from designing, producing, marketing and distribution, so we are a fully functioning fashion house,” he says. He further notes that they believe now is the right time for them to make an impact in African fashion having studied the industry from the best reknown international fashion brands.

The fashion house concept was developed towards the end of covid-19 when the world had started opening up its economies so it has been in existence for about a year.

Given that the fashion industry is growing and promising in Uganda, Lubega believes competition will not be much of a problem for the brand as it is the least of their worries.

“We are not worried about competition but we are worried about the weight we carry to be able to influence the way Fashion is perceived in Uganda and Africa as a whole. We are worried about the big task we are taking on to inspire and encourage African fashion designers  and brands to look beyond and apply a global approach to their works and be able to compete with big brands like Versace, Gucci, Karl Lagerfeld and others,” Lubega said.

The brand promises innovations through offering high end quality products, unique prints and use of safe legit ingredients for their cosmetics all crafted with a professional touch.

With all the above in mind, it’s no shock that TRU iKON is nominated in the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards in the category of Emerging Fashion Brand and they hope that this nomination is reassurance to the world that the brand is on the right track.

Even though they are in the process of setting up shop in Kampala they can be accessed online to make purchases through https://truikon.com/
