The last time we saw Enola Holmes (Brown), she was going to launch her own detective agency. In Enola Holmes 2, we meet her running from the police. Flashback to before the chase, her agency is up and running but not in the way she had hoped. Potential clients walk into her door alright.
However, they are not too keen on her age and the fact that she is a woman. Not to mention the fact that she is not her brother, Sherlock Holmes (Cavill). Just when Enola is about to give up, Bessie (Bliss), a young girl, comes into the agency’s doors requesting her services. Bessie’s assignment is for Enola to locate her sister, Sarah (Dodd). Enola takes on the case and ends up undercover, working in the matches factory where Bessie and Sarah worked. This sets off a trail of mystery solving that is as entertaining as it is exhilarating.
Film sequels have a long history of being a disappointment so I was nervous about watching Enola Holmes 2. Had nothing to worry about! Enola is still up to all the good in unconventional ways. Also, having read about the real Sarah Chapman, I was curious about how the movie would incorporate real-life events with fiction. It was done beautifully. The movie spun a wild yet believable story, brought in history, and managed to link our boy Tewkesbury (Patridge) to the storyline. Remember Tewkesbury?
Millie Bonny Brown may be the star of the movie but the rest of the cast carries their weight well. It feels like no one wastes their screen time. Whether it is Enola’s interesting mother, Eudoria (Carter), and her friend Edith (Wokoma) with their wild antics or Sherlock and his no-nonsense demeanor, or Grail (Thewlis) and his cane, everyone and scene are interesting. Definitely worth your MBs.
