Male celebrities who have wept in public

Singer Gravity Omutujju weeps during a press conference on October 13, 2022.

Everyone has a breaking point. However, toxic masculinity suffocates men’s feelings and denies them their right to openly express pain. Sensitization against men suppressing their emotions is still en route but there are men who are already walking the talk.

American Fashion star, rapper and producer Kanye West has many times cried in public. Sometimes, during his performances, while explaining how he almost had his first child North West aborted, he cried over slavery comment backlash, he cried while remembering his fashion professor and also when his friend, the late Virgil Abloh, presented his first menswear collection during the Paris Men’s fashion week in 2018. It should however be noted that Kanye West has bipolar disorder. Could it be the same thing happening to Ugandan celebrities?

Eddy Kenzo
Nobody could clearly understand what made Kenzo cry in 2019. His reasons were not clear enough. He talked about Rema leaving and siding with his enemies who he accused of frustrating him, and not being appreciated enough yet he is a national asset and also the late Sheikh Muzaata allegedly directing him to marry his mother.

It was evident that Kenzo was crying for love until his situation got a new twist when he wept: “Uganda government Weyayu,” The tears paid him off.

It was not long before he met President Museveni and he has been since then chilling with the “big boys”.

During an interview after gravity’s emotional breakdown, Kenzo said his 2019 tears were provoked by Rema’s move to side with his enemies. He also promised to never shed a tear for anything and before the fans could take in the assurance, Kenzo wept again.

After a successful Eddy Kenzo festival at Kololo, Kenzo was expected to celebrate at least with tears of joy but instead, he wept over threats to his life. He said people are threatening to end his life. Just like it happened in 2019, his tears were wiped off with news of the 2023 Grammy awards nomination.

Gravity
Singer Gibson Wabuyu alias Gravity Omutujju had made followers believe that he is a hard nut to crack. He used to rank and attack fellow artists forgetting Karma is B*t*h. When the time came for Gibson to taste his own medicine, the taste was too bitter. He sobbed.
Gravity wept live during a press conference after his successful Tusimbudde mu Ani Alina Enene concert.

He said his innocent family was being attacked and insulted over his uncalled-for statements.
“My statements were misinterpreted and now my children and wife are being insulted. I have three kids, they know nothing about this industry, and neither does my wife,” he cried

Chris Evans first made a public appearance crying when singer Jose Chameleon set his concert date on the same date as Chris Evans’ Ndi Kusasulaki concert. It was his first concert and he wanted Chameleon to sympathize with him.
The second time was three weeks back when artists refused to do music drops for his recently concluded concert. “Just a drop,” he wept.

Luba Events
TV host turned events promoter Moses Lubulwa alias Luba events shed a tear after singer Eddy Kenzo left him out on the organisers of the recently concluded Eddy Kenzo Festival. He says the festival was organized following a concept he worked on but he never received a penny. The Eddy Kenzo Festival was Luba events’ idea. He said he incurred losses amounting to Shs800 million. His tears paid off because the high court, resided by jus-tice Juliet Nakitende halted Eddy Kenzo’s bookings in Uganda until matters get resolved.

Omulangira Suna wept during a press conference because of the negative information the media brings out about celebrities. He said followers abuse them using the baseless information they get from television, radio hosts, and bloggers. The insulting information also affects their families especially after their children get to read the defamed information.

MC Kats
Events MC Edwin Katamba is one of the few celebrities that started young and is still bold at his craft. Besides the happy face and energetic performances, no one knew what was exactly happening in Kats’ life until he broke down in 2019. In a video that made rounds on Social Media, depressed Katamba was crying for his family, he was frustrated and lonely. However, after a series of counselling sessions, Kats bounced back stronger, he is living his stage dream and at the same time, empowering young people living with HIV/AIDs.

Bobi Wine
In December 2020, during some of the 2021 general elections campaigns, Bobi Wine and the media fraternity almost lost journalist Saif-llah Ashraf Kasirye. He was allegedly shot as police dispersed Bobi Wine supporters in Masaka. Many other Bobi Wine supporters were reportedly killed during the rallies and this got the former presidential aspirant emotional. While concluding a media address, Bobi Wine whimpered as he asked his followers to comfort each other.

Eddy Mutwe could not hold his tears during an interview with NTV. He, together with musician Ali Buken ali-as Nubian Li were narrating the torture they went through during a time they were detained at Kitalya prison.

Weasel
Singer Douglas Mayanja publicly grieved for his long time friend and singing partner Moses Ssekibogo alias Mowzey Radio. During Mowzey’s requiem mass at Rubaga Cathedral, Weasel who gave his eulogy about Radio in tears also made the audience to weep.

Singer pallaso also broke down and cried during Mowzey Radio’s burial ceremony.

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago was provoked to make an alarm “Wuuwi” after police squeezed his private part during a dehumanizing arrest in 2017.

Mr. Lukwago did not shed a tear, but he publicly expressed his pain.
