Government to amend Intellectual Property law to protect creators

The State Minister for Gender and Culture, Peace Mutuuzo has revealed that the Ministry of Gender has started working on meetings with the Ministry of Justice and constitutional affairs to make necessary amendments to the Intellectual Property law so that creatives get to benefit from their talents. Intellectual Property law deals with laws to protect and enforce the rights of the creators and owners of inventions, writing, music, designs, and other works

“We will sit down to ensure that we revise this law so that we regulate/ restrict the media so that if they use people’s talents, they pay money because it is the wealth that person invested in,” she said.

She made these remarks during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Center on Wednesday.

She disclosed that the law that guides creatives and their property, is going to be strengthened with a lot of what was left out at the time it was enacted.

“The world has been changing and the sites we used before. The way we used to do our culture, art, there was no media at that time so the law did not include the medium through which one could steal another person’s talent and use it” she added.

Revising this law will help creatives benefit from their talents whether they are alive or dead.
