Nyege Nyege: Speaker Anita Among should have done better, says Ofwono Opondo

In 2018 when then Minister of Ethics and integrity Rev. Fr. Simon Lokodo (RIP) said that the government had cancelled the Nyege Nyege event, the Executive Director of Uganda Media Centre Ofwono Opondo came out and defended the event. In a tweet, he said he spoke to Jeje Odongo and that the organizers of Nyege Nyege should go ahead with preparations for their function and also added that further review meetings involving all stakeholders were scheduled.

Earlier today on the floor of Parliament, Speaker Hon Anita Among gave a directive to have the festival halted because it’s against the morality of the country.

“We are talking about the morality of this country; we are talking about our children. You are trying to promote tourism at the expense of our children? We are not going to allow this function to take part.” She said.

With these statements, Ofwono Opondo has come out once again to defend Nyege Nyege saying that Hon Anita Among could have done better and not turned parliament into a law enforcement organ.

“But surely @Parliament_Ug and @AnitahAmong could have done better by referring to how #NyegeNyege 2018 was handled successfully without causing this unnecessary controversy. Please don’t turn parliament into a law enforcement organ,” he tweeted.
