The curious case of Winnie Nwagi

Winnie Nwagi

Last week, a video of Swangz Avenue artiste Winnie Nwagi being chased from Ministry of Internal Affairs offices over ‘indecent dress code’ made rounds on social media. Clad in a grey skimpy jumpsuit, blue-jean jacket, and white canvas shoes, Nwagi is seen being ordered to vacate the premises by a police lady and is seen walking away.

It is said reported that Mr. Simon Peter Mundeyi, the spokesman for the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that Nwagi who had been slated for an interview at the head offices had intolerably dressed, making her attire not pleasant in such a government place and that she instead started causing drama, prompting the security shifting attempt on her.

However, Nwagi’s treatment at the Internal Affairs ministry has caused a lot of commotion on social media with some sections saying she was harshly treated while others are saying she deserved it.

Some are saying the ministry should put up guidelines on how people who access the ministry should dress up because if it was another person perhaps a white person they couldn’t be treated the same way.

“We have seen ‘No smoking’ placards at different offices around town. We have also seen ‘Parking at owner’s risk’ posters pinned up and that is enough communication for someone to know what they are not supposed to do. What was done to Winnie Nwagi was unfair and she deserves an apology,” said someone who preferred to remain anonymous.

On the other hand, one Ismail Ntegge said artistes are not special people.

“Being a celebrity doesn’t mean you are above the law. These guys think they will get away with anything. Being a celebrity means you should be an example to the rest. She deserved what she got,” he said.
