UMA election should be National- Phina Mugerwa

Phina Mugerwa

Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) General Secretary aspirant Phina Mugerwa has advised UMA electoral commission to include musicians from all regions in the forthcoming musician’s elections or else postpone the exercise until they are fully prepared.

In a conversation with sQoop, Phina revealed that she will only agree with the June 28 elections if the association brings artistes from all parts of the country to participate.

“Ballot is okay but it should be national, every region should participate. You can’t tell me it’s a national association yet you want people to come to National Theatre. What if Karamajongs decide we hold the elections from Kotido, would Kampala people go? It should be well balanced. Let every region have ballots,” she said

Phina says the other regions contribute 70 percent of the association therefore catering to Kampala artists alone will be deriving those from other regions the freedom to exercise their right to vote as the constitution states.

“We have petitioned for the elections to be postponed. The Electoral Commission is not the one to make all decisions. Voters have to be included. You can’t tell me you are carrying out National elections yet the biggest percentage is not voting. If they can’t afford it, let them leave elections until they are prepared enough. The association is not for Kampala-based artists alone because had it been the case, we would be done already. We have members from every region so we should respect their membership,” she said.
