After the halting of the Uganda Musicians Association leadership elections on the 6th of June 2022, the election commission has announced a new date for the general elections.
Following a resolution on the 10th of June by the Uganda Musicians Association policy board, it was resolved that fresh polls are scheduled for the 28th of June 2022 and that the elections shall be held by secret ballot. The elections shall be carried out at one polling center which is the national theater for proper supervision.
According to Mr Geoffrey Ekongot, the Chairman Uganda Musicians Association electoral Committee following guidance from the policy board, they decided to organize polls in the next two weeks so that the association does not continue any longer without leadership.
“Due to the high cost of organizing country-wide elections, we have decided that our members will have to come and vote from Kampala. It was a difficult decision to make considering the financial circumstances of some of our members, but it was the last option available,” Vice-Chairperson UMA policy board Sophie Gombya said in a document we received.
The candidates will be expected to continue campaigning and carrying out voter education while various activities shall be conducted to engage members towards Election Day.
The elections were put on hold on the 6th due to the technical challenges faced with the digital platform sought from the National Information Technology Authority (NITA-U) which rendered the electoral exercise unable to deliver or demonstrate a free and fair result, a decision was made to choose another election date and a more viable method.
