The National Environment Management Authority has unveiled renowned Ugandan model and fashionista Judith Heard as its environment goodwill ambassador.
Heard was recently crowned Miss Environment International Africa at the Miss Environment International Pageant held recently in Mumbai, India.
Unveiling their new ambassador, the Authority’s executive director Dr. Akankwasa Barirega said such celebrities have many people they inspire and having them champion the environment campaign would ensure behavior change amongst their fans and the entire population.
“ They have a big following and so if they live environmentally sustainable lives, many
Ugandans, many youths will look at them as role models and emulate them. Dr. Akankwasa said.
“ We want to use that as a tool and platform to advance sustainable practices and if all celebrities can come on board to promote best environmental practices, the message will move much faster,” he added Dr. Akankwasa also noted that the Authority is to engaged various stakeholders including religious leaders to advance the cause of sustainable environment management
Meanwhile, in her remarks Judith heard vowed to use her assigned role through her Judith Heard Foundation to among other things promote plastic recycling, plant the Mutuba tree, and influence fellow celebrities to conserve the environment
“ My first goal is to fight and come to an end of plastic use in Uganda and all over the world, so I am sorry to the companies that produce plastics but I might have to close you down until you find something different to use to sell your products,” She said
“Every time we have tried to fight plastics, it is the companies that make products sold in plastics that end up ignoring us, but this time as miss Environment international Africa, I promise you, we gonna have a rough time together” she cautioned
She also promised to rally all fellow Celebrities to champion the sustainable environment management cause.
In 2021 she has crowned miss Elite Africa at a beauty pageant that happened in Cairo.
