Former Miss Uganda contestant, model and activist Irene Nakitende Kirabo has embarked on a campaign to improve sanitation in Ugandan community schools.
Through her charity, Different With a Purpose which is officially registered in Dallas, Texas, USA where she is based, Nakitende and her team are seeking to provide safe latrines in schools that are friendly to the girl child.
She explains that most schools have spacious latrines that the girls can freely use during their menstrual days. Nakitende notes that her plan is to construct a latrine with spacious bathrooms and a changing room.
Apparently, the project has already started as she announced the first project at Masooli Primary school in Wakiso District. “We’ve already started the project and we look forward to constructing more latrines in schools where demand is high,” she explained.
Nakitende notes that the project is purely charitable and funded by well-wishers and her friends Joan Nabatanzi, Grace Nalule, Martha Nabattu, Daphine Nabbanja, and Gift Kitibwa.
At the project launch in Masooli, the event was officiated by Nakitende’s mother Mary Nanyondo who donated Shs 1m to the cause.
