Based on the Nora Roberts novel, Brazen Virtue, this thriller is something else. Even before Netflix released it, Brazen was enshrouded in drama. This stemmed from the casting of Alyssa Milano in the lead role of Grace Miller. Some guys were not happy because of her liberal political views, and they made it known. I’m talking, people saying they would burn all the Nora Roberts books in their collection if Milano played the part –duraama! No surprise there; these are the same guys who raided Capitol Hill a year ago. I digress.
Milano plays Grace, a popular novelist whose life is upended when her sister is killed. She puts the skills, we assume she got from doing research for her novels, to try and solve the murder. The detective working the case also happens to be Ed (Page), the next door neighbour she flirted with earlier. Truly the makings of a romance thriller – which the book is. The movie doesn’t quite hit those warm and fuzzy bits well enough to be billed as a romance. It does, however, have adult content so don’t ignore the 18+ rating.
Brazen is a guilty pleasure movie. The kind you know is not that good yet you enjoy it. It helps that Milano is the lead actress because there is a familiar face. Otherwise, the movie shows that Netflix is coming for all the genres we have come to expect from Hallmark and Lifetime. Not sure that’s a good thing though. Time will tell.
