On Independence Day, singer Rema Namakula took social media by storm when she introduced her new man Dr Hamza Sebunya to her family, in what her fans have termed as an ‘extravagant’ Kukyala.
From sunrise to sunset, Rema updated her Instagram account with fresh photos and videos live from the event.
In Buganda tradition, before “kwanjula” (Introduction), which is the main traditional ceremony, the Groom has to “okukyala” meaning visiting the bride’s parents. The visitation is an informal introduction of the husband to be to the girl’s parents.
It is normally a mini celebration, with a little or no pomp, as it is also the time when the negotiation for bride price is discussed.
However, for Rema’s case, the event was marred by pomp, music, and a lot of fun, leaving fans wondering what the couple will do at their introduction ceremony, which is slated for November 14, 2019.
Speaking at the event, Rema’s husband-to-be, Mr Sebunya assured family and friends present that whatever happened was just a sample of the bigger things that are yet to come.
“I am sure that all you wherever you will go, you will appreciate what we have done today. But this is just a sample. We were just testing the microphone, but on November 14, it will be bigger and better,” Sebunya said.
The pomp
Like no ordinary ‘Okukyala’ ceremony, Rema wore different outfits for the different segments of the occasion. Upon the arrival of her man’s entourage, she wore a maroon gomesi to welcome her visitors home.
Her family had invited some people home to witness the ceremony, so after the bride price negotiations, Rema changed into another gomesi with a shade of peach to join the celebrations in the well-decorated compound.
To crown the party and say goodbye to her visitors, she wore a green dinner dress.
Rema also personalised a ‘Hello Hamza’ flower booth where she posed as if calling her future husband to the ceremony.
