Cafe Javas in Nairobi
Fast food restaurant CJ’s (Café Javas) has been accused of encroaching on public land in Nairobi Kenya.
A concerned person going by the name Boniface Mwangi took to Facebook to explain how the restaurant had grabbed a Asmah lane in Nairobi City. He alleged that the restaurant bribed officials at Governor Mike Sonko’s City Hal and grabbed an entire back street lane.
“…they even have a uniformed guard stationed there. Will Sonko reclaim the lane or he approves the grabbing? When you dine there, you promote corruption,” his post read.

Following the post, Governor Mike Sonko, today sent a team to remove the illegal gate.
In a video by Nairobi News, Sonko said quite a number of streets, roads and lanes in the city have been grabbed and some turned private property.
“We are trying to make sure that those people with appetites do not encroach and take up roads and public streets or road reserves,” he said.
“This is Koinange Street at the CJs hotel where the restaurant or the management of that restaurant had encroached on a public lane, called Asmah lane, they blocked and started using it as a private property,” he added.
The gate at Asmah lane is closed sometimes.

“So we established that the public has no access, in most cases you will always find that the gate is locked, they do not allow the public to use, because there is an access lane, which crosses from Biashara street.
He called on the public to report any persons who have encroached or grabbed or blocked any public road, reserve or lane. “Whatever the case, you are advised or directed to ensure that those areas are open for public use.”
