‘Infertile’ parish chief hangs self after wife conceives 15 years later

A Parish Chief who had reportedly been told by doctors that he would never father a child following a family planning procedure has hanged himself after his wife conceived, his family said.

The body of 38-year-old Ronald Mutaka, the Parish Chief of Kigalama Parish, Namutumba Sub-county in Namutumba district, was on Wednesday found hanging on a mango tree behind his house.

Mr Rogers Mutaka, a brother, said, “he visited specialists who told him he would never have children because during his youthful days, he chose a family planning method that necessitated cutting his male tubes.”

“Last night he shared his problem with me and we agreed to see a witchdoctor today but it is unfortunate he was discovered dead before we could do so,” Mutaka added.

“We suspect that he took his life after finding out that his wife was pregnant.”

Mr Mutaka said the deceased had endured life without a child for the past 15 years of marriage. However, his wife vowed to divorce him this year if he failed to impregnate her.

By press time police had taken the body to Iganga hospital. Busoga East Police Spokesperson, Mr James Mubi asked the family to bury the deceased after an autopsy was carried out.
