Martin Kamotho, popularly known as ‘Githeri Man’, on Wednesday checked out of rehab in a ceremony attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta among other dignitaries.
Githeri Man was among 77 recovering alcoholics who received certificates from the President after successfully completing a nine-month rehabilitation programme at Mama Care Rehabilitation Centre in Wangunyu Primary School, Kiambu County.
Also present was Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba, who booked Kamotho at the centre in June under the direction of President Kenyatta.
Kamotho unwittingly thrust himself into the limelight during the August 8, 2017 General Election after he was pictured eating githeri from a polythene bag while waiting in queue to cast his vote.
The photo quickly went viral turning him into an online sensation and a much sought after personality by the media and other corporate entities, culminating in his presentation with a a Head of State commendation by President Kenyatta on Jamhuri Day 2017.
But soon things went south for the much talked about Githeri Man following heavy drinking leading to Wamuchumba’s timely intervention.
