From President Museveni receiving an autographed pair of Yeezys from Ye himself to Sheebah’s eye-raising jumpsuits, 2018 had quite some stories to tell in the fashion circles. What stood out for you may be something different, but here is what stood out for us.
2018 has been quite the year. And with all the highs and lows, there are those of us who decided to make 2018 our year; pulling some of the biggest fashion moments ever! From the personal style moments, to some fashion scene milestones, here is a roundup of some of the year’s biggest fashion moments.
Ugandan is crowned Miss Africa
Ugandans were rallied in unity and came together to show their love and support to the reigning Miss Uganda, Quinn Abenakyo, who not only won one of the head challenges, but also made it to the top five finalist at the global pageant. She later went on to win the Miss Africa crown. Way to go!
Joy Aketch walks for Gucci
Early this year, 23-year-old model Joy Aketch went international when she got signed to Fusion Model Management in South African and M4 Model Management in Germany. Soon after that, she had the opportunity to walk for fashion giant, Gucci for their Resort 2019 fashion show in the south of France.
Aketch joins a list of Ugandan models who have made it to the global fashion scene, including Aamito Lagum, Patricia Akello, and Paul Mwesigwa, among others.
Museveni receives his first pair of Yeezys
Hollywood royalty, Kanye and his wife Kim Kardashian West were in Uganda for their maiden visit. The couple, who were photographed camping at Chobe Safari Lodge, later paid a visit to the Head of State at State House Entebbe and they had the perfect souvenir for our dear President; an autographed pair of the much sought after Yeezy Boost 350. And you still think our president does not have swag?
Emolsa Hasache at the ASFAS 2018
Possibly one of the most talked about looks from the 6th edition of the Abryanz Style & Fashion Awards was the caged look by fashionista Emolsa Hasache. Any keen follower of this fashionista knows he is not one to do basic, so any time he steps out, you need to be ready to see your jaw drop. His cage accessory worn over his all-black outfit was possibly made to fit within the day’s theme, or maybe he wanted to be the only head turner at the red carpet event.
Sheebah’s jumpsuits
For 2018, Ugandan artiste Sheebah Karungi began a fashion collaboration with stylist Glitz by Nalu. What followed was an array of bizarre fashion moments, mostly from her jumpsuits, that most times left little to the imagination. But even that could have prepared us for her pink jumpsuit that she wore to her Omwooyo concert. If you have not seen the look I am talking about, then you probably need to render your smart phone useless!
Bobi Wine’s Louis Vuitton suitcase
His political woes aside, the singer-cum-politician had a fashion moment of his own, on return from treatment in the US. Mr Kyagulanyi was photographed at the airport with a Louis Vuitton suitcase in tow. Nothing new of course. The issue came when certain members of the public did not take this well, accusing the MP of being extravagant. Political analyst Andrew Mwenda accused him of being less bothered about the plight of millions of Ugandans who live in sheer poverty while he strolled around the world with a Shs11m suitcase!
