Politics has eaten up our music – Geosteady

Geosteady

Geosteady: Singer Geosteady has not had the best year but despite all that, he will be holding a small show where he will be dining with his fans at Golf Course Hotel. Lawrence Ogwal caught up with the singer and they talked music and plans for next year.

1. You had a wonderful 2017 with two concerts, but we did not hear much of you this year. What happened?
A concert is all about showing what I have done and achieved in the year. As an artiste, you have to know where you belong, you have to look at your worth before doing a concert and I agree I have not done very well this year so I would not want to mess up at a concert. Everything that goes up must come down, it is part of life to go to the top and come down, everyone has a set up in life but if you try to maintain and not be forgotten totally, then you are safe.
This year I decided to just do a ‘Dine with Geosteady’ as a way of giving back to the fans. The idea started after I realised that it is not always just about making money from fans but also giving back to them. So I will be dining with them every end of year, as we share a meal and talk.

2.Your 2017 show was a sellout but we heard that same success got you fighting with your manager to separation. Tell us about that.
Up to now, people do not know the real reason I separated with my manager and I had chosen to keep quiet. If you know someone who has a poor soul, then that was my manager, Unik. I have invested in this business for six years and I need to see returns from investments but why do you fake receipts to steal my money. Up to now, he receives calls on my behalf and tells promoters I am busy and that I charge about Shs10m, making me lose business.

3. Fik Fameica said you inspired him in a way. Did you?
Fik Fameica came to me in 2016 as my fashion stylist because he owned a boutique then. As we worked together, he told me he could actually rap. He sampled Pistol for me and his rap was so good, so I contributed some money for his video shoot and also helped with the rest of the songs. The rest is history.

About his concert, I think he rushed. We have to put some things in place before holding a concert and one of them is respecting the media and the people in your line of duty. I think knowing your worth and how close your fans are to you is key. Fik Fameica, according to many, did not respect people around him and he always felt like he was the most selling artiste.

We always meet and talk and I tell him never to lose hope. It was just the beginning of the journey and he has to just continue doing good music. The journey has just started because it is rare to find an artiste of his age putting up a concert, I must say he is a very strong boy.

4.What do you think about the music industry this year?
The music industry has been affected by politics. Every year brings at least one good artiste or one or two hits songs but this year, it has not been the case. When an artiste is trying to come out, there is always a political issue that comes out and the song is forgotten.

5.We heard you were kidnapped sometime, or was it a stunt?
You know when you go to a foreign country, you have to have your phone and people track you on it.

As we were there, we kept communicating but when I lost the phone for about an hour, they said I was kidnapped. My people were just too fast to post but I had just forgotten my phone at a music school, but I found it after. It was not a publicity stunt because that is what most people thought.
