The Uganda Communications Commission has released a list of local movies nominated for awards in the upcoming film festival, slated for November 26th to 30th, 2018.
The movies have been nominated in 20 different categories, including cinematography, production design, sound, acting, editing, directing, among others.
The Uganda Film festival was initiated in 2013, to promote the local film industry and to bring all industry stakeholders together, as well as give a spot light to the young Uganda Film & Video industry both locally and internationally.
Award Categories
The following are the awards to be competed for this year:
1. Best Cinematography
This award will be given to the film that receives highest points for cinematography awarded by the judging panel as per the set judging criteria. This includes techniques as the general composition of a scene; the lighting of the set or location; the choice of cameras, lenses, filters, and film stock; the camera angle and movements; and the integration of any special effects.
2. Best Costumes (Production design)
This award will be given to the film whose Costumes will attract the highest points awarded by the judging panel in line with the set judging criteria.
This includes the visual style of the story that is the design of sets, location choices, costumes, makeup, graphics, props, lighting, camera angles and special effects.
3. Best Sound
This award will be given to the film whose sound (Music & Sound) effects receives the highest points awarded by the judging panel in line with the set judging criteria. This includes the manipulation of previously composed or recorded audio such as sound effects and dialogue. It may also involve the composition or manipulation of audio to create a desired effect or mood.
4. Best Screenplay (Script)
This award will be given to the film whose screenplay receives the highest point awarded by the judging panel in line with the set judging criteria.
This includes original works or adaptations from existing pieces of writing including the movement, actions, expression, and dialogues of the characters are also narrated.
5. Best Student Film
This award will be given to the film that collects the highest points awarded by the judging panel for student films competing in this category in line with the set judging criteria.
6. Best Animation
This award will be given to the film that collects the highest points awarded by the judging panel for Animated Film competing in this category in line with the set judging criteria.
7. Best Short Film
This award will be given to the film that collects the highest points awarded by the judging panel for short films competing in this category in line with the set judging criteria.
8. Best Feature Film
This award will be given to the film that collects the highest points awarded by the judging panel for feature films competing in this category in line with the set judging criteria.
9. People’s Choice Award
This award will be that which the audience participates in selecting. This award is given to the film that collects the highest points overall. Usually a focus group of about 10 people or more representative of the public will be identified to watch 3 to 5 films recommended by the expert jury for consideration in this category. Popular appeal is an important criterion in selecting the winning film in this category.
10. Best Actor
This award will be given to the Actor who collects the highest points overall.
11. Best Actress
This award will be given to the Actress who collects the highest points overall.
12. Best Documentary
This award will be given to the documentary Film that collects the highest points overall.
13. Best East African Film
This award will be given to the East African Film that collects the highest points overall among all the films submitted from the East African countries.
14. Best Post-production/Editing
This award will be given to the film work which collects the highest points overall. This category includes the complete film editing, color correction and the addition of music and sound into the film.
15. Best TV Drama/Series
This award will be given to the TV drama that collects the highest points awarded by the judging panel.
16. Best Actor in a TV Drama
This award will be given to the Actor who collects the highest points overall.
17. Best Actress in a TV Drama
This award will be given to the Actress who collects the highest points overall.
18. Special Award/Life Achievement Award
This award will be given to an outstanding person or group in the promotion of the film industry in Uganda and in Diaspora.
19. Best Director
This award will be given to an individual who controls the film’s artistic and dramatic aspects and visualizes the screenplay/script while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of that vision.
20. Best Supporting Actress
This award will be given to an actress who has delivered an outstanding performance in a supporting role below that of the leading actor(s).
21. Best Supporting Actor
This award will be given to an actor who has delivered an outstanding performance in a supporting role below that of the leading actor(s).
22. Best African Film Award
This award will be given to the African Film that collects the highest points overall among all the films submitted from the African continent.
