You are rare on stage, isn’t comedy paying enough anymore?
I would not say comedy is not paying enough. But over exposure has negative effects over time. You see there comes a point when you realise almost everyone know your jokes; that is the point at which you should cut down on appearances and invest in creating new material. That is what I have been doing.
I thought you earn on comedy gigs, how do you survive with less gigs?
I have been running a company called Big Yard that does Printing and Branding. I have worked with corporate companies for whom I do big budget printing and branding.
What have you done for the comedy industry?
I have groomed and brought up fresh talents like Optional Allan and others and I am bringing more through my comedy platform known as Camp Comedy. Camp Comedy is an idea I got many years ago and so far I have held three events. The first camp comedy was at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre and then it went to Forever Resort in Jinja. I took a break and I will return this year with another edition on December, 1 in Jinja.
What happens at Camp Comedy?
As the name suggests, Camp Comedy is where people sit around campfires to listen to jokes from different comedians.
Why this particular idea?
There are different comedy events around town and all of them are in bars and theatres. I wanted to bring something unique and taking people for camping is the idea that I came across.
What is the one great thing that has happened to you this year?
My fiancé Faith Kahumuza giving birth to our first daughter Haile. She is the best thing that has ever happened to me this year. I love her to the moon and back.
They say that men who talk a lot about their women are serial cheats?
Haha, that is not me, I might be tempted to cheat but my Kahumuza has got this special hold on me. The last thing I want is hurt her or worse lose her.
What attracted you to Kahumuza?
She is the one who understands me and when we met, she respected the fact that I was a public figure and always working till late since my kind of job is to work at night. That understanding and diplomacy made me fall in love with her. There are very few women with her character and I am so proud of having her.
Won’t your fans forget you as a comedian?
On the contrary, the less gigs you take the more fans look forward to your performances. For the last 15 years, I have been doing comedy and I do not think it is easy being relevant for all these years. I have created a brand name that whenever you talk about comedy, you have to talk about me.
