A sex joke on an armed pregnant police officer yesterday ended the life of a judge’s driver.
Ismail Mayiga, a driver of Justice Musa Sekaana of the High Court, was shot by police constable Daisy Nagasha at the judge’s residence in Bukasa, Makindye Division in Kampala.
A police source who has seen the statement Ms Nagasha made at Kabalagala Police Station, said when Mayiga reported for duty at about 7am, he started mocking the officer that her gun could not “shoot” him.
Ms Nagasha reportedly told the detectives “Mayiga held the muzzle of the gun and pulled it saying it cannot shoot him, but it’s his “gun” (meaning his penis) that he would use to shoot her.”
She reportedly stated that Mayiga started playing with the gun but he did not heed to her caution.
“I also held the gun. Suddenly, the gun discharged the bullet and hit him in the abdomen,” a police source quoted Ms Nagasha’s statement.
The police spokesperson, Mr Emilian Kayima, said they were treating the shooting as an accident.
“It is a regrettable incident; currently all indications show it was not intended but an accident. Still, this matter is being investigated,” Mr Kayima said in a statement.
Police said the killer gun would be taken for forensic examination to establish whether the deceased’s fingerprints were left on the muzzle to confirm or disprove Ms Nagasha’s claims.
There were queries into how touching the gun’s muzzle would discharge a bullet.
But police said the bullet could have been in the gun chamber because officers who guard Very Important Persons are required to keep their guns cocked while on duty in readiness for prompt reaction in case of any attack.
Police suspect that as the officer and the deceased were pulling the gun, the trigger was pulled and the bullet went off.
Speaking to this newspaper about the incident, Justice Sekaana said at about 7am while in his house, he heard a loud bang outside and did not know what went amiss.
“Immediately after the loud bang, my house help came to me asking for the keys of another car to take the driver to hospital because he had been shot by the police guard. That is when I rushed out to see what was happening. I saw the driver lying near the gate,” Justice Sekaana said by telephone.
“Some of the boda boda riders from nearby stages came and helped carry the driver into the car that took him to International Hospital Kampala but he was pronounced dead on arrival,” he added.
Asked whether his driver and the police guard had had any differences prior to the incident, Justice Sekaana said he was not aware of any rift.
The judge said he had been with the driver for about two months.
The deceased is survived by a wife and children.
He was buried last evening as per the Muslim tradition in Busika-Vumba, Ndeeba, Luweero District.
