VIDEO: 11-year-old Meghan Markle fights sexism

Following her fairy tale wedding yesterday, a powerful video from Meghan Markle’s childhood has resurfaced, proving that Prince Harry’s wife has been an activist from a very young age.

In the clip, the former Suits actor – then aged just 12 – is seen fighting for equality against a sexist TV commercial during a segment on Nickelodeon’s Nick News.

Markle first shared the story of her war against a dish soap ad, which had the tagline “Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans”, while speaking at a UN Women’s event in 2015.

Describing her protest, she said, “At the age of eleven, I had created my small level of impact by standing up for equality.”

The actor recalled being outraged at the implication that only women wash dishes, and wrote a letter to the company who produced the soap, and also to powerful women she admired including Hillary Clinton, lawyer Gloria Allred, and Nick News host Linda Ellerbee.

The protest was a success, with the company changing the slogan to: “People all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans”.
Meanwhile, Ellerbee was clearly taken with the young feminist and invited her on to the Nickelodeon program back in 1993.

The young girl added a powerful message to her fellow kids: “If you see something that you don’t like or are offended by on television or any other place, write letters and send them to the right people, and you can really make a difference … Not just for yourself, but for lots of other people.”
