Imagine a life where we were nice to everyone around us!

He walked around the place, carrying two plates of fish and chips and proudly delivering them to the owners. One could easily feel for his feet as they paced firmly on the ground. This man went on and on about his job with such passion. He maintained his smile, composure and neatness.

Half way into his schedule, one of the ladies asked if he was about to take his break and he said, “No, I like what I do and will retire when everyone is gone”.
This was a humbling waiter serving customers at one of the prominent places around town. In this era, finding such people is a rare thing, I must say.

For starters, some people make it hard for others to appreciate their work by belittling them while in the line of duty. Secondly, others demean their jobs thinking they are way bigger than what they currently do and end up not appreciating their roles and what they have.

This waiter reminded me of the adage, “a bird in hand, is worth two in the bush”. He held steadily onto his “bird” and served everyone with deserving passion, caring less about what everyone thought, how they reacted and only smiling when compliments and the deserving tips came through.

We really need more of such people in this era. This experience reminded me of a nasty encounter I had at another restaurant where the lady who could hardly express herself in English told me straight up that I could not have what I had ordered for after she got me the wrong order. Really?

I almost yelled in fury but let it go. Seeing this man made me wish that all people in the service line held onto such character, defined their roles and executed them to the best of their ability. Such a person brings pride to not only his employer but also his profession and who knows how many places such people could go with such virtues?

At the end of the day, the road to the right journey starts with taking the first steps in the right direction. Loving what we do, when we do it and to him we do it serves us better and can take us places as opposed to living life to tick a box.
Imagine how sweet life would be if we all sought happiness through serving others better, huh? cnankyam@gmail.com
