RAHU holds HIV/AIDS awareness concert

After organizing this year’s prestigious Young Achievers’ Awards, Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) has added another credit to their CV.

The yout-empowerment organization held the IKnowKati concert at Nyamityobora Sports Grounds in Mbarara last week.  The HIV/AIDS awareness gig was in commemoration of World AIDS month.

The day began with a 10KM and 5KM marathon followed by speeches from local area politicians and stakeholders who emphasized the need to fight HIV/AIDS in Mbarara district.

“Mbarara District is ranked among the top 13 districts with a high number of HIV/AIDS in Uganda and therefore, we need to constantly find new ways of ensuring that we reduce these rates in our district,” Dr. Peter Ssebutinde, District Health Officer Mbarara, said in his speech.

Assistant Inspector General of Police Dr Stephen Kasiima who also heads the traffic and road safety directorate of the Uganda Police Force encouraged youth to stay sober so as to avoid getting involved in accidents and engaging in unprotected sex which leads to HIV/AIDS.

Guests were later treated to family planning services and cervical cancer screening, HIV testing and counseling.

But it would not have been a concert without music. RAHU’s cultural Icons Geosteady, Mun*G, Allan Toniks and Nutty Neithan were on ground to keep the revelers entertained. They were backed up by  Fik Fameica, Darxx Kartel, Rena Nalumansi and Gravity Omutujju.

Prior to the concert, the RAHU team and partners had been to different communities like Rubindi, Rwanyamahembe, Kizungu, Kakoba, Bugamba and Katete to create HIV/AIDS awareness integrated with access to family planning services.
