One would rush into this story to read about the renowned Joy Doreen Biira who is famous for being a news anchor. Well, this is another Doreen Biira from Kasese District who was on Saturday crowned Miss Tourism Rwenzori region.
The crowning took place at Uhuru Gardens in Kasese town and saw Biira beat 5 other girls to take home the crown, this was followed by other goodies from sponsors like a phone from Africell and a GOTV decoder from Multichoice.
It wasn’t easy winning because during the Q and A session from the judges, all the girls didn’t look smart including Biira herself but perhaps she was crowned because of her height as compared to others who were short.
When asked by one of the judges to mention one of the mountains in Rwenzori region, one of the contestants looked on like she had never attended a Primary school where Mountain Rwenzori was among the most talked about mountains in Uganda.
Another contestant, because of the too much pressure and the nervousness, she introduced herself and later says she is representing Mbale yet the competition was in Rwenzori region. The most notable thing was most of the Beauty Queens couldn’t express themselves very well in English.
Other winners included Biira Mackline from Kasese District who was crowned 1st runner up and Mary Immaculate Nakalema became 2nd runner up. Being the second region to be crowned since the regional search kicked off a week ago in Jinja, the organizer of the Rwenzori Pageant Mr Bismac Moses Amumpaire, he asked the audience to observe a moment of silence in tribute to Late Hon Maria Mutagamba who initiated the pageant in 2013.
Other regions including Karamoja, Northern, Kigezi and Buganda among others will be crowned in subsequent events before the grand finale that will take place later this year.
