She is key to stopping the war

We caught a glimpse of Diana Prince/Wonder Woman (Gadot) in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and our interest was more than piqued. That’s the thing, movies which pique my interest before the trailer is released usually disappoint. Then there is the fact that I’m team Marvel; it’s only Batman and Superman that I find interesting among the DC comics characters. So I didn’t really have Wonder Woman on my list of movies to watch out for this year. Big mistake on my part.

The plot is set during World War I, and not World War II. Also, Wonder Woman’s heritage is way cooler than it is in books –she is Zeus’ daughter. This explains her super strength much better than her having been formed from clay. But I’ve gone ahead of myself.

What is the movie actually about? It’s about Diana Prince, an Amazon princess who has always had a warrior’s spirit in her, much to her mother Queen Hippolyta (Nielsen’s) exasperation. Steve Trevor (Pine), a pilot in the US army crash lands into Diana’s world. After he realises what a skilled fighter she is, he tells her about a looming war that threatens to destroy the world as they know it. Her acceptance to try and stop the war might also have something to do with the fact that her half brother is Ares, the god of war. Her transition from the Amazon into the ‘civilised’ world is the source of a lot of the humour in the movie.

But it is not just the story that has made Wonder Woman such a hit. There is the superb direction from Patty Jenkins who I wasn’t so sure about given that the only thing I’ve watched with her name attached to it is Entourage. Then there is the cast. Gadot is such a believable warrior princess. Considering this movie has been in the works since 1996, it is a relief that it is as good as it is.
