Drake yesterday became the first artiste to scoop 13 accolades in the Billboard Music Awards, beating Adele’s 2012 record of 12 awards at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The Canadian’s win might not come as a surprise because he came to these awards with 22 nominations, the most during this year’s event. He was able to win top artiste, top male artiste and top Billboard 200 album, among others.
“I got my whole family up here,” said Drake, who stood on stage with nearly two dozen people, including his father, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj.
Drake overcame Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Adele, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Twenty One Pilots, Shawn Mendes and the Chainsmokers for the top prize.
But surprisingly, of those nominees, only Drake and the Chainsmokers attended the Billboard Awards.
Other celebrities that made it to the show include Cher, who not only received the Icon award but also sang her dance anthem.
John Legend and Florida Georgia Line also had a shining moment when they sang a duet version of the country duo’s hit, “Holy”. So did Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj whose performances were good.
