Artiste Jose Chameleon proudly claims that he chased away Zaire music from Uganda. Well he might have, he might not have but the fact is him alongside Bebe Cool contributed a lot towards Uganda people embracing their own. Their dominance meant that artistes such as Awilo Longomba, Shella Mwana, Koffi Olomidde and the late Papa Wemba had to find some other place to perform from.
But after some years, Ugandans really missed Congolese music and ounce in a while flew in Lingala artistes and like always they never disappointed and among those that never did is Rumba maestro General Defao who is slated to have his performance in Uganda after years.
The musician who is already in town for the first ever Lingala Night happening tonight at Sheraton Hotel will be performing songs like ‘Sala Noki’, ‘Amour scolaire’, ‘Famille kikuta’ and ‘Animation’ among others that rocked Africa in the 80s and 90s.
The event which is a celebration of Congolese music, is slated to be a bi-annual event and will be featuring different artistes but this particular show is aimed at giving back to charity as proceeds from it will go directly to a charity home known as ‘New Beginnings Foundation’.
Besides Defao, the show will also have Congolese designer Les Sapuers showcase the best African wear from Congo as well as artiste Charmant Mushaga and his friends Rogatien Milord and an energetic band from Entebbe entertaining the crowd as well.
