Most of us know George Clooney as that handsome actor babes are always commenting about. After all, the Hollywood actor is among the few to have been voted the sexiest man alive over three times. We first saw him acting in the ER series on TV and after began seeing him in big movies. Some of the bigger movies he has been in include Money Monster, Oceans’ Eleven, The Descendants, Batman & Robin, Gravity and Spy Kids. And just when the world thought that this “sexiest man” would never get married, he surprised us by marrying the high-profile lawyer, activist and author, Amal Alamuddin.
Clooney keeps the surprises coming and the latest is to do with South Sudan. It seems the country’s wars are not about to end anytime soon. And this has caught the attention of many including Clooney, who invested in having an investigation about the war done.
In his report with fellow actor Don Cheadle, Clooney accused the political elite in South Sudan of exploitation while the country is divided by a civil war.
A two-year undercover investigation by The Sentry Group, founded by Clooney and fellow activist John Prendergast, found that President Salva Kiir, former vice-president Riek Machar and military generals were making fortunes while being paid modest government salaries.
“They’re stealing the money to fund their militias to attack and kill one another,” Clooney said. “The evidence is thorough, it is detailed and it is irrefutable.”
The report further reported that the leaders own a collection of luxury homes in many countries including Uganda (we are not shocked) and a variety of expensive cars, and enriched themselves and their families through stakes in oil and other business ventures.
Clooney and his associates called on the international community to cut off the leaders’ financial flows through tougher sanctions.
Well, at least the famous actor is spending some of his money for a good cause. We hope other artistes can do the same.
